In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the use of the Synthetic Environment (SE) to reduce the massive cost of training military personnel without compromising on quality. However, a major problem with this kind of venture is the potential for the trainees not to be fully immersed within the environment and questions have already been raised about the risk of replacing live training with simulations. So far, however, there has been little discussion about just how realistic the SE can be and what the training audience think of this new method of preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine whether technology has sufficiently advanced to a point where the military can make full use of the SE to replace live training.
This paper has been divided into four parts. The first part deals with the existing synthetic training within the air environment and how it is currently integrated to create a synergistic effect for our personnel.
The second part will look at the challenges and advantages being faced by the units task with using the SE to create immersive scenarios using existing technologies to make the training as realistic as possible.
The third part will look into the near future and what is currently in the pipeline to enhance what existing training there is and how this can be used to develop even more realistic training for personnel.
Finally, the paper will identify opportunities and concepts for future development in order to determine whether there will ever be a stage when live exercises cease to represent value for money as the SE can deliver everything and more.
